Project Summary:
Canada’s reputation as a safe country to live and bank in is luring buyers from abroad and driving the housing boom in and around Toronto. The City of Kitchener is in Southern Ontario, Canada, located approximately 60 miles west of Toronto. It is an expanding and thriving cultural Metropolis in the Golden Horseshoe area of the Great Lakes and is the fourth largest metropolis in Ontario. Kitchener is also the seat of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo and this area is a big part of Canada’s housing expansion.
Set to begin service in 2017, ION is a visionary plan that will shape the community for the future by bringing Light Rail Transit (LRT) to the Waterloo Region in two stages. ION will provide a frequent, reliable and convenient way to travel throughout the region. With 200,000 new residents expected to move to the Waterloo Region in the next 20 years, ION will reduce traffic congestion, limit costly road expansions, limit sprawl and attract new employers. GrandLinq, the Region’s public-private partner on ION Stage 1 LRT, will design, build, finance, operate and maintain ION over the next 30 years.
As part of the project, Airex supplied Monoxivent’s Single Wall UnderDuct for the pit exhaust duct in the Kitchener/Waterloo Light Rail Transit Maintenance Building and Car Wash Building. The project was designed by Chris Leherbauer of AECOM Engineering in Toronto and installed by Rozell Sheet Metal, Inc. located in Cambridge, Ontario. Monoxivent worked closely with both Airex and Rozell in the design and fabrication of all the underground exhaust duct servicing both the maintenance pit and car wash areas. Given the long life expectancy of the UnderDuct product, this small contribution to the project will inevitably help with the success of this Light Rail Transit system and Toronto’s continued growth.
